SUMMARY:Baldoyle Bay Seagrass Restoration Project Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that 150 years ago\, seagrass was flourishing in Baldoyle Estuary? And that now\, there is virtually none. \nWhy does that matter? Because seagrass captures and stores carbon\, filters water\, prevents erosion and supports bio-diversity. \nNow\, the Baldoyle Bay Seagrass Restoration Project aims to revive the lost seagrass ecosystem in Baldoyle Estuary with the participation of local communities and government. \nIf seagrass can be grown here successfully\, it will provide a blueprint that can be rolled out nationally. \nIn this talk\, project co-founders Eveann Nolan of Ocean Breakers from Sutton and Cllr. Joan Hopkins from Baldoyle – two committed\, locals with no background in Marine Science – will explain how\, through sheer determination and passion\, the community can get seagrass thriving again in our local area. \nLet’s meet in Howth Yacht Club: \nFriday\, 26th April at 7PM \nDon’t miss this appointment and share this invitation with your family and friends: it is our opportunity to live in a healthier\, biologically preserved local environment! \nRegister online at: https://bit.ly/3U3cU2o

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting & Talk with Bob Fannin
DESCRIPTION:Held in the Asgard Room. All are welcome. \nA night not to be missed with Bob Fannin‘s entertaining talk at 8 pm on his life\, sailing and … how to sail without Making Waves! \nA taste of what you can expect on the night in Bob’s own words\nI started sailing aged 10 at Clontarf Yacht and Boat Club. Five years later\, I joined the crew of fishing trawlers in Howth.  Then I was a paid deckhand on a Malahide conversion – they were Portuguese trawler hulls converted to motor-yachts\, heading from Howth to Ft. Lauderdale\, Florida\, via the Mediterranean\, west Africa\, the Caribbean and Bahamas. \n  \nIn 1978\, I sailed with John Gore Grimes\, my father\, and others\, from Howth to Iceland and back. A year later\, again with John\, we sailed Shardana from Marblehead in Massachusetts to Cork for the feeder race for the disastrous Fastnet of 1979. The following year we sailed Shardana up to Spitzbergen\, tried to get around it\, couldn’t\, (there was ice back in those days) and capsized on the way home. \n  \nNext up I sailed with Jack Coffee from Dublin to New York\, via the Azores\, and then back to Dublin  again\, Commander Bill King was one of the crew for the leg out. 1982\, Bill and I\, sailed the 40ft Nicholson Ghostwing from Troon in Scotland to Newport\, Rhode Island. There\, Brian Moore\, owner of Ghostwing\, asked me to take his boat to the Caribbean and work aboard it as charter skipper for the winter. And so started a career as a charter skipper in the Caribbean and Mediterranean\, and many trans- Atlantics on mostly classic yachts. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Into the Deep with Ken O'Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Tuesday Talks series\, Howth Yacht Club is delighted to announce that underwater cameraman Ken O’Sullivan\, whose work has been featured on RTÉ’s NORTH ATLANTIC: The Dark Ocean\, and Ireland’s Deep Atlantic) will do a live show at HYC! \nOn Tuesday\, 28 November\, at 7:30 p.m.\, Ken will provide Howth Yacht Club with a multimedia experience about his adventures diving in the North Atlantic ocean\, encountering enormous whales\, monstrous sharks\, and exploring the amazing underwater world. He will show videos and give insight and backstories into what it’s like trying to navigate this vast ocean\, and to find and film some of the largest animals ever to have lived. Conservation and education have always been at the heart of Ken’s documentaries and he will also talk about some of the great challenges facing our marine animals and habitats\, and how — after donating his documentaries to education — his work now features on the secondary school curriculum in Ireland. \nThis is a ticketed event. HYC members (and their guests) have the first opportunity to purchase a ticket for what is sure to be a sold-out show\, so don’t delay! \nGET YOUR TICKET NOW

SUMMARY:Tuesday Talk: Pat Lawless
DESCRIPTION:“Solo\, non-stop\, unassisted round the world 30\,000 mile race. Nine months at sea alone in a small boat (GREEN REBEL)\, the Golden Globe Race is the longest and loneliest sporting event in the World. It will entail stepping back to the Golden Age of solo sailing\, with no modern technology.” \nThat’s the Golden Globe Race. A voyage for mad people? the Golden Globe is widely regarded as the toughest and loneliest race in sailing. Competitors are not permitted to set foot on land or receive assistance for the duration of the race. Communication with family and friends is also prohibited. In keeping with the spirit of the first Golden Globe Race competitors can only use 1968 technology when navigating. Pat Lawless took part in the 2022 version but had to retire in Cape Town because of a broken self-steering gear. A tremendous achievement to get to the start line and to sail through the North and South Atlantics. But not enough for him – he has entered the 2026 Race! “Unfinished business” he calls it… \nRegardless of what you think\, come and hear him talk in HYC on Tuesday 24 October at 7.30pm. It will be a riveting talk – his energy and drive comes across as he takes the audience through his project and what draws him back for another go. There is free admission but a donation to the RNLI would be appreciated.\nPut the date in your diary! \nCheck out Pat’s website here.

SUMMARY:First Aid Course
DESCRIPTION:From Susan Kavanagh: \nWe have done one-day courses previously run by RemoteMedic which have been well received. Joanna is offering that again this year but also a 2-day course\, covering some topics in more detail. Please see the below flyer. As she will be away in the early part of next year\, she is suggesting that we plan a course or courses for October or November this year. \nCourse gives you a First Aid certificate valid for 2 years. Haven’t negotiated prices yet but one-day course last year. was €125\, including a RORC textbook. \nFirst Aid at Sea

SUMMARY:Stand Up Paddleboarding with Discover SUP
DESCRIPTION:Following on from our very successful introduction to Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) recently with Eoin Kernan of Discover SUP (see the fun video in our Video Corner)\, here is a chance to try out those skills! This expedition is suitable for anyone who has any SUP experience at all and Eoin is happy to do a quick intro with anyone who hasn’t yet tried it but would like to take part. This is a special Cruising Group event (with CG discount) – any spaces we don’t take up will then be offered to Club members. \nAutumnal SUP Tour – Sunday\, 17th September 2023 \nImmersed in nature and beauty\, our upcoming Autumnal SUP tour offers a chance to take in a unique perspective on the beauty of the Grand Canal\, combining relaxation and adventure. Escape the bustle of Howth and connect with the rich heritage that flows along and between the bridges and canal banks. \nStarting at 10 am\, you will grab your paddle\, step onto your board\, and embark on a 7km meander between the 12th and 13th locks of the canal. The trip will take approximately 2 hours at a gentle pace and will finish with a relaxing coffee and snack at the Cliff at Lyons Hotel (at a fireside table). \nSuitable for those who are comfortable completing 7km while paddling (can be a mixture of kneeling and standing); also comfortable if falling into the water and getting back on board. For anyone new to SUPing\, Eoin can have a chat with you in advance to explain and answer questions. HYC boards and kit can be booked in advance. \nDiscounted rate for Cruising Group members – €35 \nPlease let Susan know if you are interested. At this point\, we are looking for an idea of numbers – booking information will follow.

SUMMARY:ICC Course
DESCRIPTION:This ICC (International Certificate of Competence) course starts on Wednesday\, 13th September at 7:30 p.m.; the theory refresher runs Wednesday through Friday inclusive\, with the practical planned for Saturday 16th or Sunday 17th September (depending on weather). The cost is €135\, including the theory and practical assessment. \nThe ICC facilitates chartering at home or abroad\, whether that is a RIB or a yacht. If you are not around in September but want to get an ICC\, give your name to Karen in the HYC office and she will plan another course. \nInternational Certificate of Competency – Guide
