High Latitude Sailing with Joe Phelan and Peter Killen

Peter Killen and Joe Phelan entertained a full house of members on Tuesday, Nov 21st with tales and pictures of their voyages to the high latitudes, both north and south.

On six voyages over a fifteen-year period, Peter skippered four different boats to parts of the world that most people only get to see on natural history documentaries. Joe was navigator for the voyages and the two of them were joined by friends and family members for various legs of the voyages.

Peter and Joe kept their audience in awe with spectacular photographs, including beautiful villages in some of the most isolated polar areas, whales, polar bears, massive icebergs and abandoned whaling and research outposts. Their humourously understated tales gave those present a hint of the challenges, not to mention hazards, that go hand in hand with voyaging in areas that are barely charted and subject to weather extremes that often produce wind speeds exceeding 50 knots and can quickly result in planned sailing routes becoming ice-bound.

The High Latitudes talk was the latest in the Winter Series organised by the Cruising Group. Next week, as part of the same series, HYC will welcome Ken O'Sullivan for his Into the Deep talk, for which there are still a few tickets available. Ken has been giving this talk around the country (check out his Instagram page for more) and we are delighted he has chosen HYC for his North Dublin stop on the tour! There will be videos, stories, and insights into the marine world, from a perspective only this underwater filmmaker can offer us. Ken O'Sullivan's Into the Deep talk will be held at HYC on Tuesday, the 28th of November, at 7:30 p.m.; please purchase your tickets here.
