The Cruising Group brought its 2024 season to an end with a joyous Awards Dinner in HYC last Saturday. Despite the lurking remains of Storm Darragh, 100 people braved the elements to enjoy an evening filled with goodwill and conversation with their fellow sailors.
A drinks reception set the evening in motion before Rear Commodore Jill Sommerville (on behalf of Commodore Kevin Monks) welcomed everyone. She presented Susan and Sarah with flowers from the General Committee to mark their "retirement" from the Group Captaincy.
The Awards went to Gill Molyneux (photography), Harry Whelehan (best log), Guy Molyneux (Howth Plate) and Gerry O'Neill (best volunteer). The Wicklow Lighthouse table won Gary McGuire's head-wrecking quiz and was presented with their trophy. After dinner, there was a surprise "This is your Life" turn from Regina Martin and Gerry O'Neill, leaking some previously unknown facts about Susan and Sarah, before presenting the famous Red Book and generous gifts from Cruising Group members. Quite a few people took home a spot prize and, when all that was over - everyone stayed, settling down for more chat and enjoyment.
It was a truly wonderful night and our thanks go to Aideen and her staff who helped it run so smoothly.
